The Niagara Integrated Film Festival
Though this event only takes place during certain times of the year, if you can schedule your trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake during this time you are going to greatly enjoy yourself. The film event takes place in June, with dates being released a few months prior to this happening. There are two locations in which these take place including the Galas at Jackson-Triggs which is accompanied by decadent food and drink with the movie, and the Filmalicious, that is hosted by two wineries of the town, which also offers dinner and movie.

Niagara-on-the-Lake Historical Sites are a Must See
Taking a vacation is often on a person’s to-do list. However, for those who are history buffs, a vacation on the beach and tropical breezes may not be what they had in mind. Luckily, there is a place that you can go that is going to not only satisfy your historical interests, and also be a great place for the entire family to go. And this place is Niagara-on-the-Lake, located in Southern Ontario where the Lake Ontario and Niagara River meet.
History of the Area
Within the area, you are going to find that it is quite historical. It was started as a settlement in 1781, called Butlersburg. Afterwards, it was a British military base known as Fort Niagara, during the time of the American Revolution. In 1792, it was renamed Newark, and was made the first capital of Upper Canada. It wasn’t until 1798 that the town was renamed Niagara.
During the War of 1812, Niagara played a central role. It was overtaken by American troops and later burnt to the ground, but it rebuilt and came back stronger. The town was even a stop on the Underground Railroad! Due to all the history that has taken place in this town, it has several historical sites that you will not want to miss.
Historical Sites to See
St. Mark’s Church
This church is the oldest Anglican Church that can be found in Ontario. Those who visit here are going to find that the architecture is what is most surprising about this church, as it is simply stunning to those who see it.

The McFarland House was built around 1800, and is the oldest building within Niagara-on-the-Lake. This home was used as a hospital and Officer’s Quarters during the War of 1812. The home did survive the fire that burned the rest of the city. Today, there are guided tours, and afterwards you can stop at the café for pastries and tea.
Old Court House Theatre
This is a national historic site that can be dated back to the 1840’s. Not only is the building historic, but there are still shows that are hosted here, so it is a must see for all those who visit.
Battle of Fort George
Though this is not exactly a landmark to visit, it is definitely someplace to go. The battle was during the War of 1812, and there are commemorative plaques to tell the history. There is nothing like standing in the same place that the events took place in for the historical junky.
